Wissant bay is arguably the Opal Coast's finest landscape: a perfect arc of sand strung between Cap Blanc-Nez and Cap Gris-Nez, both visible from the beach. From our mobile homes in Le Portel it's a 35-minute drive along the D940, one of France's most scenic coastal roads — the journey is part of the pleasure.
Wissant itself remains a simple, endearing fishing village: a few streets, seafood terraces, traditional flobart boats on the square, and the constant ballet of kitesurf wings across the bay.
Things to do in Wissant and the bay
The beach and bay first: golden sand as far as the eye can see, simultaneous views of both capes, and the region's best kitesurfing spot (steady wind, open water — schools on site for beginners). At low tide, the walk towards the Aval dune and the wreck of the Lord Grey delights walkers and photographers.
Combine it with the Two Capes: climb Blanc-Nez in the morning (6.5 km loop from Escalles, views of England on clear days), lunch on bouchot mussels in Wissant, then the Gris-Nez path in the afternoon. It's the 'big landscapes' day we recommend first to all our guests.
Why stay in Le Portel to visit Wissant
Le Portel enjoys a rare central position on the Opal Coast: right next to Boulogne-sur-Mer and the Nausicaá aquarium, halfway between the Two Capes Grand Site to the north and Le Touquet to the south. From our mobile homes on the clifftop of Le Phare d'Opale campsite, Wissant is a 35-minute drive — and when you return, you get the quiet of a gated campsite, Le Portel beach a few hundred metres away and the sunset over the Channel from your own terrace.
Staying in Le Portel rather than at the destination itself is also a matter of budget and availability: accommodation at the tourist hotspots is noticeably pricier and fills up early in the season, while from here you can reach every destination on the coast without moving base. Le Portel is also ideally placed for British visitors: 35 minutes from the Eurotunnel terminal at Coquelles and 40 minutes from the Calais ferries.
