Falaises de craie de la Côte d'Opale en direction du Cap Blanc-Nez

Cap Blanc-Nez is the Opal Coast's iconic summit: 134 metres of white chalk above the Strait of Dover, France's most northerly cliff, and on clear days the English coast visible to the naked eye — Dover is only 34 km away. From our mobile homes in Le Portel, allow a 40-minute drive, much of it along the sea.

Together with Cap Gris-Nez it forms the Two Capes Grand Site de France, one of the country's most protected landscapes. Half a day covers the classic hiking loop; a full day lets you link both capes with lunch in Wissant — our favourite itinerary.

Things to do at Cap Blanc-Nez

The Blanc-Nez loop (6.5 km, about 2 hours, from the Escalles car park) is the coast's most spectacular walk: up to the Dover Patrol obelisk, then along the cliff edge above the chalk, with plunging views over the strait and its dozens of cargo ships and ferries — the busiest shipping lane in the world. In spring, the contrast of flowering rapeseed against the chalk draws every photographer in the region.

Below, Escalles beach (reached via the Escalles 'cran') offers a grandiose, uncrowded descent to the foot of the cliffs. Round it off with the charming village of Escalles, a crêpe at the hamlet of Strouanne, or the climb up Mont d'Hubert and its Two Capes museum.

Why stay in Le Portel to visit Cap Blanc-Nez

Le Portel enjoys a rare central position on the Opal Coast: right next to Boulogne-sur-Mer and the Nausicaá aquarium, halfway between the Two Capes Grand Site to the north and Le Touquet to the south. From our mobile homes on the clifftop of Le Phare d'Opale campsite, Cap Blanc-Nez is a 40-minute drive — and when you return, you get the quiet of a gated campsite, Le Portel beach a few hundred metres away and the sunset over the Channel from your own terrace.

Staying in Le Portel rather than at the destination itself is also a matter of budget and availability: accommodation at the tourist hotspots is noticeably pricier and fills up early in the season, while from here you can reach every destination on the coast without moving base. Le Portel is also ideally placed for British visitors: 35 minutes from the Eurotunnel terminal at Coquelles and 40 minutes from the Calais ferries.

Frequently asked questions

Can you really see England from Cap Blanc-Nez?

Yes — on clear days the white cliffs of Dover are visible to the naked eye, just 34 km across the strait. Best conditions: a rinsed sky after rain, in the morning or late afternoon.

Is the Cap Blanc-Nez walk doable with children?

The full loop (6.5 km) suits walking children from about 6-7 years old. With younger ones, the out-and-back from the Escalles car park to the obelisk (1.5 km) already gives you the essential panorama. Keep children away from the cliff edge, which is unfenced in places.

How far is Cap Blanc-Nez from the Blueportel mobile homes?

About 35 km — a 40-minute drive from Le Phare d'Opale campsite in Le Portel. Le Portel's central position lets you combine Cap Blanc-Nez, the Nausicaá aquarium (10 minutes) and the rest of the Opal Coast in the same day.

Can I book for just a weekend?

Yes, Blueportel mobile homes can be booked from 2 nights, all year round. Availability is shown online in real time, and booking direct avoids platform service fees.
