The closest point of France to England, wild coves, migrating birds and the Crans coastal path: the coast in its raw state, 25 minutes from your sea-view terrace.

Cap Gris-Nez is the closest point of France to England — 28 km as the gull flies — and the wild sibling of Blanc-Nez: lower (45 m), more mineral, more raw. A lighthouse at the tip, sandstone coves, windswept heathland and the endless procession of cargo ships through the world's busiest strait. From our mobile homes in Le Portel: a 25-minute drive.
It's the coast's ultimate nature outing, best combined with the fishing villages of Audresselles and Ambleteuse on the way — and our favourite late-afternoon walk, when the low light sets the cliffs ablaze.
Things to do at Cap Gris-Nez
The Crans path, between Audresselles and the cape (8 km out and back, or as an inland loop), is one of the finest walks on the coast: wild coves, sea-sculpted sandstone slabs, and at the end the Gris-Nez lighthouse overlooking the strait. The cape is also the region's best birdwatching spot: over 300 species recorded, with the great autumn migrations as a free spectacle.
At low tide, the coves of Cran aux Œufs and Cran Poulet reveal rocky platforms perfect for shore foraging. And on the way back, a stop at Audresselles is compulsory: a seafood platter in a fisherman's cottage, with crab landed that very day.
Why stay in Le Portel to visit Cap Gris-Nez
Le Portel enjoys a rare central position on the Opal Coast: right next to Boulogne-sur-Mer and the Nausicaá aquarium, halfway between the Two Capes Grand Site to the north and Le Touquet to the south. From our mobile homes on the clifftop of Le Phare d'Opale campsite, Cap Gris-Nez is a 25-minute drive — and when you return, you get the quiet of a gated campsite, Le Portel beach a few hundred metres away and the sunset over the Channel from your own terrace.
Staying in Le Portel rather than at the destination itself is also a matter of budget and availability: accommodation at the tourist hotspots is noticeably pricier and fills up early in the season, while from here you can reach every destination on the coast without moving base. Le Portel is also ideally placed for British visitors: 35 minutes from the Eurotunnel terminal at Coquelles and 40 minutes from the Calais ferries.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between Cap Gris-Nez and Cap Blanc-Nez?
Blanc-Nez (134 m) is the great white chalk cliff, spectacular and busy; Gris-Nez (45 m) is wilder: sandstone, heathland, coves and migrating birds. The two combine perfectly in one day with lunch in Wissant or Audresselles in between.
Is Cap Gris-Nez easy to access?
Yes: free parking 500 m from the lighthouse (full at midday in summer), then a flat path to the tip of the cape. For a proper hike, the Crans path from Audresselles gives 1.5 to 2 hours of spectacular clifftop walking.
How far is Cap Gris-Nez from the Blueportel mobile homes?
About 22 km — a 25-minute drive from Le Phare d'Opale campsite in Le Portel. Le Portel's central position lets you combine Cap Gris-Nez, the Nausicaá aquarium (10 minutes) and the rest of the Opal Coast in the same day.
Can I book for just a weekend?
Yes, Blueportel mobile homes can be booked from 2 nights, all year round. Availability is shown online in real time, and booking direct avoids platform service fees.
