Holiday rental near Ambleteuse and Audresselles: the authentic villages, 20 minutes away
The Vauban fort standing in the sea, whitewashed fishermen's cottages, crab landed that day and the Slack dunes: the coast's two most endearing villages, 20 minutes from your terrace.

Between Wimereux and Cap Gris-Nez, Ambleteuse and Audresselles concentrate the most authentic side of the Opal Coast: a 17th-century fort standing in the water, low fishermen's cottages with coloured shutters, traditional flobart boats on the shingle and restaurants where the lobster comes straight from the tank. From our mobile homes in Le Portel: a 20-25 minute drive along the D940.
It's the perfect 'charm and seafood' outing, to combine with the Crans path towards Gris-Nez or a walk through the Slack dunes — an exceptional botanical site.
Things to do in Ambleteuse and Audresselles
In Ambleteuse, the Vauban fort (Fort Mahon) is the most photographed monument on the coast: the only sea fort of its kind still standing on the Channel-North Sea shoreline, set at the mouth of the Slack and reachable on foot at low tide (volunteer-run tours in summer). The Atlantic Wall museum (Todt battery, in nearby Audinghen) completes the history side.
In Audresselles, you come to wander between whitewashed fishermen's cottages, buy the day's crab and lobster, and eat facing the sea. At low tide the rocky platform is one of the coast's best shore-foraging spots. Between the two villages, the Slack dunes offer a unique walk among wild orchids, sea buckthorn and deserted beaches.
Why stay in Le Portel to visit Ambleteuse and Audresselles
Le Portel enjoys a rare central position on the Opal Coast: right next to Boulogne-sur-Mer and the Nausicaá aquarium, halfway between the Two Capes Grand Site to the north and Le Touquet to the south. From our mobile homes on the clifftop of Le Phare d'Opale campsite, Ambleteuse and Audresselles is a 22-minute drive — and when you return, you get the quiet of a gated campsite, Le Portel beach a few hundred metres away and the sunset over the Channel from your own terrace.
Staying in Le Portel rather than at the destination itself is also a matter of budget and availability: accommodation at the tourist hotspots is noticeably pricier and fills up early in the season, while from here you can reach every destination on the coast without moving base. Le Portel is also ideally placed for British visitors: 35 minutes from the Eurotunnel terminal at Coquelles and 40 minutes from the Calais ferries.

Frequently asked questions
Can you visit the Ambleteuse fort?
You can walk to the fort at low tide all year round (check tide times), and the Friends of the Fort association runs interior tours on some summer weekends. It's at its best at sunset, when the fort stands silhouetted against the Channel.
Where can you eat seafood in Audresselles?
Several fishermen's cottages in the village serve crab, lobster and seafood platters landed that day — book at weekends, the dining rooms are tiny. The simple option: buy from the stall and enjoy it on your own sea-view terrace.
How far is Ambleteuse and Audresselles from the Blueportel mobile homes?
About 18 km — a 22-minute drive from Le Phare d'Opale campsite in Le Portel. Le Portel's central position lets you combine Ambleteuse and Audresselles, the Nausicaá aquarium (10 minutes) and the rest of the Opal Coast in the same day.
