Holiday rental near Equihen-Plage: the wild neighbour, reached on foot along the cliffs
The famous upturned-boat houses, dunes as high as hills and a wild beach — reachable on foot from our mobile homes along the clifftop path. The coast's best car-free outing.

Equihen-Plage is our neighbour to the south: a tiny resort nestled between high dunes, famous for its 'quilles en l'air' — old boat hulls turned upside down and converted into houses, a legacy of the early-20th-century fishing village. From our mobile homes in Le Portel it's a 10-minute drive… or, far better, a walk along the clifftop path: 1.5 hours there and back above the sea, our signature outing.
It's the closest raw-nature destination to your terrace: living dunes, an uncrowded beach even in August, and one of the coast's least-known viewpoints at the top of the Mont de Couppes cliffs.
Things to do in Equihen-Plage
The clifftop path first: from Le Portel, the trail follows the cliff edge south between meadows and drops, with the Channel below and, on clear days, the silhouette of Cap d'Alprech and its lighthouse. On arrival, the upturned-boat houses await in the lanes at the top of the village — some can be rented, all deserve a photo.
The beach itself is one of the wildest in the area: broad at low tide, framed by high dunes, lifeguarded in summer at its centre. The local club runs sand yachting, and the Mont Saint-Frieux dunes just to the south offer one of the coast's finest dune walks (biological reserve, starting from Dannes).
Why stay in Le Portel to visit Equihen-Plage
Le Portel enjoys a rare central position on the Opal Coast: right next to Boulogne-sur-Mer and the Nausicaá aquarium, halfway between the Two Capes Grand Site to the north and Le Touquet to the south. From our mobile homes on the clifftop of Le Phare d'Opale campsite, Equihen-Plage is a 10-minute drive — and when you return, you get the quiet of a gated campsite, Le Portel beach a few hundred metres away and the sunset over the Channel from your own terrace.
Staying in Le Portel rather than at the destination itself is also a matter of budget and availability: accommodation at the tourist hotspots is noticeably pricier and fills up early in the season, while from here you can reach every destination on the coast without moving base. Le Portel is also ideally placed for British visitors: 35 minutes from the Eurotunnel terminal at Coquelles and 40 minutes from the Calais ferries.
