Looking for a holiday rental near Boulogne-sur-Mer? Our two Blueportel mobile homes are in Le Portel, the seaside town right next to Boulogne: a 10-minute drive from Nausicaá and the old town, but on the cliff side, in a quiet gated campsite with panoramic views over the Channel. Just 35 minutes from the Eurotunnel, it's a favourite with British families.
Boulogne-sur-Mer deserves more than a stopover: Europe's largest aquarium, one of the best-preserved walled towns in northern France, the country's biggest fishing port and a basilica with a spectacular crypt. Here's how to make the most of it — and why Le Portel is the ideal base.
Things to do in Boulogne-sur-Mer
Four highlights structure any visit: Nausicaá (Europe's largest aquarium — allow 4 to 5 hours), the walled old town and its complete rampart walk, the crypt of Notre-Dame basilica (the largest in France) and the fishing port, where fishmongers sell the night's catch every morning on Quai Gambetta.
Add the sandy beach right in front of the aquarium, the castle-museum with its Egyptian mummies and Inuit masks, waffles on Rue de Lille and a 'welsh' (the local melted-cheese speciality) by the port, and you have a very full day out.
Why stay in Le Portel to visit Boulogne-sur-Mer
Le Portel enjoys a rare central position on the Opal Coast: right next to Boulogne-sur-Mer and the Nausicaá aquarium, halfway between the Two Capes Grand Site to the north and Le Touquet to the south. From our mobile homes on the clifftop of Le Phare d'Opale campsite, Boulogne-sur-Mer is a 10-minute drive — and when you return, you get the quiet of a gated campsite, Le Portel beach a few hundred metres away and the sunset over the Channel from your own terrace.
Staying in Le Portel rather than at the destination itself is also a matter of budget and availability: accommodation at the tourist hotspots is noticeably pricier and fills up early in the season, while from here you can reach every destination on the coast without moving base. Le Portel is also ideally placed for British visitors: 35 minutes from the Eurotunnel terminal at Coquelles and 40 minutes from the Calais ferries.

Frequently asked questions
Where should I stay to visit Nausicaá and Boulogne-sur-Mer?
Le Portel is the best compromise: 10 minutes from Nausicaá and central Boulogne, yet quiet and facing the sea. The Blueportel mobile homes offer panoramic views, a covered terrace and a full kitchen — more space than a Boulogne hotel for a lower budget.
Is Boulogne-sur-Mer worth visiting from the UK?
Very much so: it's only 35 minutes from the Eurotunnel terminal and 40 minutes from the Calais ferries, making it the perfect first (or last) stop in France — with Europe's largest aquarium, a medieval walled town and the freshest fish on the coast.
How far is Boulogne-sur-Mer from the Blueportel mobile homes?
About 5 km — a 10-minute drive from Le Phare d'Opale campsite in Le Portel. Le Portel's central position lets you combine Boulogne-sur-Mer, the Nausicaá aquarium (10 minutes) and the rest of the Opal Coast in the same day.
Can I book for just a weekend?
Yes, Blueportel mobile homes can be booked from 2 nights, all year round. Availability is shown online in real time, and booking direct avoids platform service fees.
