Grande plage de sable de la Côte d'Opale en direction de Berck-sur-Mer

At the southern end of the Opal Coast, Berck-sur-Mer has two specialities worth the trip: the coast's largest colony of seals, lounging on the sandbanks of Authie bay, and the International Kite Festival, which every April turns its immense beach into a multicoloured sky — 500,000 visitors in a week. From our mobile homes in Le Portel: 45 minutes on the A16.

It's the ideal 'deep south' excursion of a week-long stay, easily combined with neighbouring Le Touquet or the Bagatelle amusement park for children.

Things to do in Berck-sur-Mer

The seals first: Authie bay shelters dozens of harbour and grey seals, visible all year from the Bec de Perroquet point, ideally two hours before low tide, when they haul out onto the sandbanks. Bring binoculars and keep 300 metres away — the area is protected, with volunteer guides on hand in season.

The beach, one of the largest in northern France, hosts sand yachting, kiting and lifeguarded swimming in summer. In April, the International Kite Festival is a spectacle unique in Europe (free access to the beach). With children, add Bagatelle park (family rides, 10 minutes away) or a 'rosalie' pedal-car ride along the promenade — a local institution.

Why stay in Le Portel to visit Berck-sur-Mer

Le Portel enjoys a rare central position on the Opal Coast: right next to Boulogne-sur-Mer and the Nausicaá aquarium, halfway between the Two Capes Grand Site to the north and Le Touquet to the south. From our mobile homes on the clifftop of Le Phare d'Opale campsite, Berck-sur-Mer is a 45-minute drive — and when you return, you get the quiet of a gated campsite, Le Portel beach a few hundred metres away and the sunset over the Channel from your own terrace.

Staying in Le Portel rather than at the destination itself is also a matter of budget and availability: accommodation at the tourist hotspots is noticeably pricier and fills up early in the season, while from here you can reach every destination on the coast without moving base. Le Portel is also ideally placed for British visitors: 35 minutes from the Eurotunnel terminal at Coquelles and 40 minutes from the Calais ferries.
