Renting a Mobile Home Direct From the Owner on the Opal Coast: Why It's (Often) the Best Choice
Renting from an owner means zero agency fees, direct contact and more flexibility — provided you know the right checks. The honest guide, from owners who rent out their own mobile homes.

Should you rent your mobile home directly from an owner, or go through a holiday-village campsite or a platform? In one sentence: for a stay on the Opal Coast, renting direct from an owner is often the best value — no service fees or commission, a single point of contact and more flexibility — provided you check a few things before booking.
We're Michel and Véronique: we rent out our two Le Portel mobile homes ourselves, direct. This article takes a side, of course, but it's honest about the real advantages as well as the precautions to take when renting from a private owner.
Owner, campsite or platform: what really changes
Three main channels exist to rent a mobile home on the coast. The holiday-village campsite (Tohapi, Flower, etc.) runs a fleet of standardised units. The platform (Airbnb, Booking…) connects you and adds its fees. The private owner rents their own property, direct. The difference isn't just price: it's the relationship, the transparency and the flexibility.
| Criterion | Owner-direct | Holiday-village campsite | Platform |
|---|---|---|---|
| Service fees | None | Built into the price | 12-16% on top |
| Cleaning fees | Often included / clear | Variable | Often flat €40-80 |
| Point of contact | The owner | Reception / call centre | Platform support |
| Local tips | Personalised | Generic | None |
| Arrival flexibility | High | Fixed times | Depends on host |
| Unit booked | The one in the photos | A category, not the unit | The one in the photos |
The real advantages of renting from an owner
1. The fair price. With no commission or service fee, the direct rate is often 10-20% cheaper for an identical stay. With us, that's €80-140 a night for 4-6 people depending on the season, with no surprises.
2. A single point of contact. You speak to the person who knows the property, the area and the sea. We send our guests the tide times, the beach map and our favourite spots — and we reply ourselves, usually within the day, via the contact page.
3. Flexibility. Arrival time adapted to your journey, advice before the stay, possible arrangements on 'orphan' dates — flexibility a booking call centre doesn't offer.
The precautions to take (we play fair)
Renting from an owner calls for a minimum of checks — the same ones that avoid 90% of disappointments:
- Verifiable reviews: look for a presence on third-party platforms (Booking, Airbnb) where reviews are authenticated. Our Booking.com listing shows 8.3/10 on real reviews.
- A clear total price: ask for the all-inclusive rate (cleaning, tourist tax) before comparing.
- Honest photos and, ideally, a view taken from the terrace — 'sea view' should mean sea view.
- A traceable booking: a contract or written confirmation, and secure payment (a deposit). Be wary of any off-platform payment.
- A reachable owner: test responsiveness by asking a question before booking.

Frequently asked questions
Is it cheaper to rent a mobile home from a private owner?
Often, yes. With no commission or platform service fee, the direct rate is generally 10-20% cheaper for an identical stay. At Blueportel, expect €80-140 a night for 4-6 people depending on the season, with no hidden fees.
Is it risky to rent from a private owner?
Not if you check a few things: authenticated reviews on third-party platforms, a clear total price, honest photos, written confirmation and secure payment, and a responsive owner. A reputable host almost always has a verifiable public trace.
What's the difference between an owner and a holiday-village campsite?
The owner rents their own property (the one you see in the photos), with direct contact and personalised tips; the holiday-village campsite runs a standardised fleet where you book a category, not a specific unit, via a call centre.
How do you book direct without going through a platform?
Through the owner's website: at Blueportel, availability and rates are online and booking is direct with written confirmation, with no service fees. A question is handled directly through the contact page, usually within the day.
